Leyton Orient continued their outstanding start to the season as they beat Walsall 1-0 at the Breyer Group Stadium, a result that saw them go four points clear at the top of EFL League Two.

A 58th minute goal from Omar Beckles was enough to secure an 8th win from 9 league fixtures so far for the O’s.

In the National League, Dagenham & Redbridge bounced back from two straight defeats as they beat struggling Altrincham 4-1 at the Chigwell Construction Stadium whilst Southend United picked up a point at home to high-flying Wrexham in a goalless draw.

But the consensus at Roots Hall was that the Shrimpers were robbed of victory, as Jake Hyde had what many thought appeared to be a perfectly good goal disallowed.

The second qualifying round of the FA Cup saw a number of local sides in action and in our featured tie, Romford of the Essex Senior League secured one of the day’s biggest upsets as they won 2-1 away to Isthmian Premier League high-flyers Potters Bar Town to set up a plum tie at home to National League South side Chelmsford City, who scored a thumping 6-1 win against Kings Langley at Melbourne Park.

Billericay Town also went through thanks to a comfortable 4-0 win away to Essex Senior League club Enfield, as did fellow Isthmian Premier League side Hornchurch who picked up a 3-0 victory in their tie at Maldon & Tiptree.

Heybridge Swifts and Braintree Town fought out a 1-1 draw and met again on Tuesday night at Cressing Road, where the Iron edged through with a 2-1 victory and now face a trip to Hornchurch in the next round.

There was disappointment for Grays Athletic, East Thurrock United, Waltham Abbey, Concord Rangers and Canvey Island, all of whom were knocked out.

Our other featured match was in the Isthmian North, where Brentwood Town finally celebrated their first league win of the 2022/23 campaign with a 3-0 victory over bottom club Gorleston.

In local Rugby Brentwood went top of Regional 2 Anglia, thanks to a 43-22 win at home to Chingford.
