One 2 Three Friday 12.8.22 with Julie Bennett from Independent Age.

P H O E N I X   P L A Y E R
with Julie Bennett from Independent Age.
One 2 Three
Patrick Sherring

Julie Bennett from Independent Age told us that the organisation originated through the concerns of  a group of Victorian philanthropists. Now nationwide a range of services are available for those over 65 years, as well as volunteering opportunities for people of any age. Via the website https://www.independentage.org there is access to a wide range of advice and help. A helpline 08003196789 is available Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Locally there is also an email address, essex@independentage.org . Julie stated that 850,000 people are not claiming Pension Credit who would have an entitlement.  She gave an example of someone who they had helped obtain Pension Credit. This had provided access to other benefits, resulting in the client receiving  considerable extra money each month. There is a community services team that can help facilitate activities to meet a particular need in an area. Her example was of organising a group to provide dancing. The Campaigning team seeks to promote the needs of older people. At this time one of the campaigns concerns seeking extra emotional support for bereavement. Responding to the financial crisis, Money-wise workshops are being organised. Volunteering opportunities are outlined on the website. These include one-to-one activities, such as accompanying someone to a coffee shop. Volunteers can also assist with providing advice and campaigning. A new initiative is conference calling, where six people can be joined to a phone call to chat together. Fundraising is a necessary component with a wide range of volunteering possibilities. This includes at the moment looking for someone prepared to undertake a skydive. Could it be you?
