There was once again plenty of sporting action to report on this week’s show, but I was focusing in particular on the First Round Proper of the FA Cup, which is always one of English domestic football’s more intriguing events.

Two years after the disappointment of going out in the Fourth Qualifying Round, Bowers & Pitsea of the Isthmian Premier League managed to reach the First Round stage for the first time in their history and secured a tie away to EFL League One club Lincoln City, who were four divisions and 99 league places above Rob Small’s side going into Saturday’s tie.

But Bowers were completely unfazed by the occasion and the 5800 crowd, and put in a tremendous performance, only losing 1-0 in a match which saw them have chances to gain a result.

Southend United also exited the competition, losing 3-1 away to fellow National League outfit Chesterfield despite taking an early lead through Rhys Murphy.

But EFL League Two outfit Leyton Orient booked a place in round two of the competition.

They faced Ebbsfleet United of the National League South at the Breyer Group Stadium, who played well but Aaron Drinan’s 24th minute strike proved enough to see the O’s through to the next stage.

Then, on Monday night Dagenham & Redbridge of the National League faced Salford City of League Two in front of TV cameras at the Chigwell Construction Stadium.

An early Jordan Turnbull goal was enough to see Salford through, despite the Daggers having a number of chances during the match.
