This week I reflected on the Euro 2020 tournament and England’s superb campaign, which of course ended in disappointment last Sunday when they lost the final to Italy on penalties.

But with that now behind us, thoughts have now turned to preparations for the 2021/22 season at club level, and many of our local sides were in action yesterday.

Brentwood Town travelled to Kent and took on Sevenoaks Town, scoring a 4-2 victory, and Dagenham & Redbridge got the better of hosts Braintree Town as Daryl McMahon’s men won 4-3.

Meanwhile, Leyton Orient took on Premier League Tottenham Hotspur at the Breyer Group Stadium in competition for the JE3 Trophy, in honour of the late former Spurs defender and Orient manager Justin Edinburgh, and the prize was shared as the two sides drew 1-1.

At Wembley, St Helens became the holders of the Rugby League Challenge Cup for the first time in 13 years, coming from behind to beat Castleford Tigers 26-12.

And in local Cricket, Chelmsford stayed top of the Essex League 1st XI Premier Division after beating Hornchurch by four wickets at Chelmer Park.
