Show goes on with virtual open mic night

Paul Golder writes for the Brentwood Gazette

Our Sunday morning presenter Jon Good also runs an Open Mic Night every Monday at the Essex Arms – at least, he did until very recently.

Due to the new guidelines issued by the government aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19, the Essex Arms, along with all other local venues, has been cancelling events or closing completely.

However Jon decided the show must go on – and hastily arranged his own virtual open mic night!

Local singers were invited to take part using their laptops and were able to transmit their music over social media.

A number of regular local singer/songwriters took part with Jon in the first show, including Gracie Mae, Ellie Fairchild, Brook Miller, Kevin Piggot and Katie B.

The shows are recorded for radio airplay and you can hear them again at 10pm on Friday evenings on 98.0FM. The Open Mic Nights are also podcasted at phoenixfm.com. If you want to take part in a future Open Mic Night you can contact Jon at jongood1972@gmail.com.

** Phoenix FM is aiming to stay on air and will be broadcasting regular news and information on the current crisis, with emphasis on what is happening locally.

** We will be continuing to welcome guests to the studio – at a suitable distance from each other, of course!

Andy Knox and Jamie Hall from local band Jimmy Vorn will be chatting with Nick Field on Curveballs, and Essex folk-rock outfit This Circus Life will be playing a live acoustic set on 50 Shades Of Chay. Singer Maxfield will be also performing live on The Sunday Sessions.

And Phoenix FM presenter and clinical psychologist James Roast will be chatting to Rev Patrick Sherring on Friday Night Extra.
