Friday Night Extra 4.10.19 The power of the song with Tom Page singing live.

It was great to have Tom with us tonight, singing three songs and staying for most of the show to join in the chat. Jonty was also back, four years since he first came into the show, and off to university on Monday. We played lots of classic songs tonight that have been very successful and clearly mean a great deal to many people.
Tonight’s playlist
Scott Walker – The old man’s back again – a song with a story
Harry Chapin – Cats in the cradle – another story song

David Pickthall Big Band – In the mood – requested by Phyl who loved the show last week when David was the guest and we played three tracks from the album.
Tom Page singing live. Wicked game a hit single for Chris Isaak. Don’t get me wrong – a classic by the Pretenders that just makes you want to dance. Broken Halos – an interesting song by country star Chris Stapleton.
Birthday today of Chris Lowe from the Petshop boys, 60 years old today.

Ben E King – Stand by me – there are over 400 recorded versions of this song.
Beach Boys – Good vibrations – a song that could not be covered by anyone else.
U2 – Still haven’t found what I’m looking for
Marvin Gaye – What’s going on – Tom noted that the genius of Marvin was he made it all sound so effortless.
Aretha Franklin – Respect
Santana – Smooth
Chart this week in 1968
No 1 Mary Hopkin – Those were the days
No2 The Beatles _ Hey Jude
No12 Beach Boys – Do it again

No 1 canned Heat – On the road again
Lobo – Dream lover – Patrick requested this version of a song made a famous a decade earlier by Bobby Darin
The Beatles – Yesterday – a truly great song with the genius of George Martin adding the simple accompaniment.
Scott Mackenzie – Let’s go to San Franciso

Join me next week when my guest id Revd Stuart Hull from Christchurch Warley. If you look back in the archive you can find recordings of Stuart visiting the show when he was in the congregation at Ingatestone, training for the ministry at Oxford and his curacy in Chelmsford.
