We feature a lot of different sports in our programming on Phoenix FM and inevitably the programmes we put out about Premier League football are always the most popular.

But community radio isn’t just about trying to win popularity contests. I’ve always loved grass-roots sport as it’s one the best ways to engage the local community – and there are so many to choose from. But we aim to cover them all one way or another!

So we were very pleased to welcome Jenny Hyland and Sandra Nichols to the studio this week. They are on a mission to recruit new members for the Billericay Bowling Club.

The club, which is based at Lake Meadows, has been very successful and currently has 70 men and 30 ladies among its membership and players can be either social or competitive. The 2019 season has just kicked off with a special Open Day.

Jenny and Sandra chatted to our lunchtime presenter Scott Ross about how easy it is to get involved – you don’t need experience or special equipment, you can just turn up in a pair of flat soled shoes or trainers!

The interview can be heard again on our website at phoenixfm.com and the club has its own website at www.billericaybowlingclub.co.uk.

** Phoenix FM is organising a special fundraising Fun Casino evening on Friday 9th August at the Society of Old Brentwoods. The event, which is sponsored by Rainer Hughes solicitors, isn’t a serious gambling event where you could lose your shirt – it’s organised by Funky Casinos who are experienced in making their events energetic, fun-loving and professional.

We’d like to say thanks to all of the people who have signed up so far and if you haven’t, we hope to see you there! For more details you can visit our website or call Steve Roach on 07952 498009.

** We’ve got lots more great guests coming up in the next seven days.

** Local author Tony Fosgate will be talking to Scott Ross about his new travel book “Satan’s Gut, Sausage Boats and Ice Kisses”, and Laura Hanford of F Barnes Solicitors will be chatting to Ian Leigh on Drive about changes in divorce law.

** We’ve also got live interviews and sessions with Smokin’ Donuts, Morrissey and Marshall, Micky Niner, Sophie Griffiths and Motorcycle Display Team.
