Friday Night Extra 27.7.18 with studio guest Edward Carter.

Edward Carter told us about making a film on Frinton beach with him building sand castles. This was for The God Movie project at Chelmsford cathedral.. After university he had set up a company where he was designing and selling board games. Following a call to ordination, and training near Oxford, one of his roles was working at the Chapel at Windsor Castle. For the last ten years has had the position of Canon Theologian for the C of E Diocese of Chelmsford, being based at Chelmsford cathedral. Here has traveled throughout Essex, somewhere he had never visited before coming to the post. He commented that when he had travelled to a church to lead a meeting, take a service or develop a discussion, he had always ending up learning something himself. He has not neglected his love of board games, playing weekly in a pub in Chelmsford. Recently he took part, with an amature opera group,  of a week of performances in the theatre in Chelmsford. He has also continued playing volleyball. He will be leaving Essex in early September, taking a new post in his home town of Norwich.

Tonight’s playlist

The Goodbye Look, ft Lydio Kitto – Superstition – a new tack from a local band. Check out their Facebook page.

Madness – Johny the horse – chosen by Edward and reminding him of family holidays. He also said he was a big Madness fan.

Pendragon – Leviathan – Six minutes of prog rock chosen by Edward to take him back to his student days.

Psalm 121 – St. Paul’s Cathedral Choir – This version was one sung often at Windsor castle chapel, and also one Edward sings himself to people when comforting is needed.

Queen – Is this the world we created?

Carrie Underwood – Wasted

Fairport convention – Si Tu Dois Partir – requested by Phyl. This tack reached number 21 in the UK charts in 1969 and they performed it on Top of the Pops. It is a Bob Dylan song and they simply decided to translate it into French. It did not make the French charts.

Beyoncé – Halo – requested by Patrick. The best selling single in Brazil in the decade 2000-2009.

The Kon-rads – Baby it’s too late – the demo single from 1963 featuring a 16 year old David Bowie on vocals that was tunred down by the record company. The original taped recording is up for auction.

The Kingdom Choir – Stand by me – The gospel choir who sang at the Royal wedding have just been given a recording contract.

Bobbie Gentry – Ode to Billie Joe – today is Bobbie’s birthday. She stopped performing in the 1970s.

Lisa Harman – Chasing a marble down the stairs

The Raiders – Indian reservation

Patrick Williams New York Big Band – 10th Avenue – A great track remembering film composer and grammy award winner Patrick, who passed away this week.

Hilary Scott – Love remains

George Harrison – What is life? – Matt popped in from preparing for his show at 10 to say how much he loved this track.

Megan O’Neil – Without

Judy Street – What? – a rarely played Northern Soul classic.

ECHO – Superdupa love – it was great to welcome three of the band members to the studio in December 2017.
