Could BBC local radio soon become considerably less local?
The BBC is considering merging Five Live with its 40 local radio stations, as part of the corporation’s plans to meet a £550 million savings target.
According to Monday’s Telegraph, the BBC are “examining a proposal under which local stations would see their output cut to just breakfast and drive-time shows, with the rest of the schedule filled with Five Live programming.”
That’s just 6 hours of live programmes a day from Essex, with the relay of Five Live increasing from 4 to 18 hours every day!
Phoenix FM will, of course, continue to broadcast live from Brentwood 24 hours a day, which includes live presenters from 7am through to midnight every day creating proper local radio!
