At 11pm on Sunday 4th August 1914, Britain entered the war which would become known as the First World war or somewhat curiously, the Great War. But how any war can be described as “great” is beyond me. Many believed that hostilities would be over by Christmas but instead it dragged on for four long years resulting in 8.5 million known deaths, 2 million wounded and 150,000 taken prisoner. Even when the war ended the horror continued with even more people falling victim to a calamitous outbreak of a deadly ‘flu virus.
I was joined today by Father Garry Jenkins from St George’s Church, Ongar Road in Brentwood who, following two special candlelight communion services held yesterday, are marking the occasion with a special event at the church today. Listen again to what Father Jenkins had to say about this by clicking the link below.
During the second hour of today’s programme, and on a lighter note we heard about the woman who called police to complain about the substandard crystal meth she had bought and wanted action taken against the suppliers.
Instead she is now facing the prospect of up to 10 years behind bars. Well that’ll “learn her” as they say.
See you tomorrow,
Scott
