A nostalgic trip down the High Street of yesteryear

Billericay High StreetOn today’s programme Frances Clamp took a walk down Billericay High Street as it was in the 1950’s. Of course the decade opened in a period of true austerity.

Rationing was the order of the day. No supermarkets then. Butchers had rabbits, and at Christmas, turkeys hanging on hooks outside their premises. Greengrocers stocked only the fruit and vegetables in season. Private cars were few in number.
