Steel Magnolias at the Queen’s Theatre

You may remember the 1989 Hollywood blockbuster STEEL MAGNOLIAS – a bittersweet comedy of tears and laughter which starred Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakisand Sally Field.

Steel Magnolias (Queen's Hornchurch)

The film has now hit the stage with the Queens’ talented resident company of actors, including Gilian Cally, Tina Gray, Sarah Mahony, Gemma Salter, Claire Storey and Lucy Wells bringing it to audiences in September and October.

Phoenix FM’s Xanthe Bearman spoken to Gilian Cally and you can hear the interview again below:

Fragile as magnolias yet tough as steel, six women share both joy and heartache in this renowned play by Robert Harling – all whilst changing hairstyles and swapping recipes!

Set in the ‘80s in a cosy beauty salon in small-town Louisiana, Steel Magnolias takes us on an emotional ride through the circle of life – all through hilarious, heartfelt everyday conversations.

Sassy beautician Truvy’s regulars include the fiercely protective M’Lynn and her beautiful headstrong daughter Shelby, new-in-town girl Annelle, sharp-tongued Ouiser and former first lady Clairee. All are thrown together in pursuit of looking their best and their bonds of friendship are as strong as steel – seeing them through births, deaths and marriages. Their heartfelt, inspiring stories will make everyone giggle, cry and appreciate the importance of true friends.

Playwright Robert Harling drew from his own Louisiana roots and family experiences when creating Steel Magnolias, which has gone on to become a huge stage and screen triumph. He has also written several successful screenplays including The First Wives Club, Laws of Attraction, Soapdish and Evening Star, the sequel to the famous film Terms of Endearment.

Steel Magnolias is directed by the superbly talented Liz Marsh – Liz previously directed the Queen’s hit Travels with My Aunt. Design is by Dinah England and lighting design by Chris Howcroft.

Steel Magnolias will be performed at the Queen’s Theatre, Billet Lane, Hornchurch, from 18 September – 10 October. Tickets are from £12.50 – £27. Call the Box Office on 01708 443333 or book online at queens-theatre.co.uk.
