SUNDAY REPLAY – 1st May 2011

Yesterday I had the pleasure of deputising for the holidaying, Dave Turner on The Sunday Replay. This gave me the opportunity to play some of my favourite tracks.

We kicked off with DOWN UNDER by MEN AT WORK which was closely followed by NOWHERE TO RUN by MARTHA REEVES & THE VANDELLAS, the 70’s classic LISTEN TO THE MUSIC by the DOOBIE BROS and IKE & TINA TURNER’s all time great RIVER DEEP MOUNTAIN HIGH.

The SCISSOR SISTERS may not have FELT LIKE DANCING but we soon sorted that out with belters like BLOW THE HOUSE DOWN by LIVING IN A BOX, HIP TO BE SQUARE with HUEY LEWIS and the NEWS, GET OUTTA MY DREAMS by BILLY OCEAN and ROAD RUNNER by JNR WALKER and the ALLSTARS.

THE TRAMMPS version of DISCO INFERNO preceded two 60’s soul classics, ARETHA FRANKLIN’s RESPECT and THE MIDNIGHT HOUR frm WILSON PICKETT. Bringing the first hour to a close with a bang we had ROLL WITH IT by STEVE WINWOOD and a smidgen of MACHINE GUN by THE COMMODORES.

Being a MAY DAY Bank HOLIDAY, I decided to celebrate in style with a special “Three O’Clock Thrill” of Rock ‘N Roll greats from the Dreamboats and Petticoats era.

To set the scene we played OLD TIME ROCK ‘N ROLL by BOB SEGAR followed by a clutch of the real thing. First off it was CHRIS MONTEZ with LET’S DANCE, THE LOCOMOTION from LITTLE EVA, the great beebop sound of BLUE MOON by THE MARCELLS and DEL SHANNON’s RUNAWAY.

Winding up the Rock ‘N Roll session were JERRY LEE LEWIS with HIGH SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL, PRETTY LITTLE ANGEL EYES by CURTIS LEE, WILD ONE by BOBBY RYDELL, HOUND DOG from the days when ELVIS PRESLEY was in his prime and finally, for me the definitive version of DO YOU LOVE ME by THE CONTOURS.

Having had my foot on the accelerator for a good 90 minutes, we slowed the pace just a tad for the last 30 minutes of the show with JESSIE’s GIRL by RICK SPRINGFIELD, LONELY BOY by ANDREW GOLD and BROKEN GLASS by ANNIE LENNOX. We then had PILOT of the AIRWAYS by CHARLIE DORE, ISLAND by GERRY RAFFERTY and a lovely song called DON’T FALL IN LOVE WITH A DREAMER by KENNY ROGERS and KIM CARNES.

Like me CHRIS FARLOWE was then OUT OF TIME.

I hope you enjoyed the listening to the music as much as I did playing it out on a lovely sunny BANK HOLIDAY MAY DAY weekend.

Fear not normality will return next week when DAVE TURNER will be back in the hot seat next Sunday at 2.
