Bloody Queen Mary

The subject of this week’s historical feature chosen by Margaret Mills, concerned the links with Essex by Queen Mary, also known as Mary Tudor, and by her Protestant opponents as “Bloody Queen Mary”.

Queen Mary is best known for her attempts at reversing the English Reformation, which had begun during the reign of her father, HENRY VIII and her attempts at restoring property to the Church which had been confiscated during the previous two reigns.

During her 5 years on the throne she oversaw the burning of over 280 religious dissenters.
