Billericay Town women clinch Division 1 South title

BILLERICAY TOWN Women clinched the FAWNL Division 1 South title with a comprehensive 4-0 win over London Seaward in front of 336 fans at New Lodge.

Trailing Hashtag United in the table for most of the season, Town needed to win this final day game in hand to win the championship but the visitors proved stubborn opponents in the early exchanges and Town took almost half an hour to get the decisive breakthrough. Zoe Rushen slipped the ball past the onrushing keeper Jamie-Lee Bamford into the path of Ruby Sealey who had the simple task of slotting into the empty net.

The same two players were involved in the crucial second goal in the 49th minute, this time Sealey playing a defence splitting pass through to Rushen who coolly finished for her 28th goal of the season and her 80th in total for the club.

Bamford was having a great game in the Seaward goal tipping over a fine shot from Shannan Drewe before Billericay survived a scare in the 79th minute when Alex Baker made a great save to deny Ash Marchant but Town put the game to bed with two late goals both from substitutes. Amber Gaylor (88 mins) and Rebecca May in stoppage time sealed both the 4-0 win and promotion to the third tier.

It was a special day for Billericay’s Kerry Stimson (no. 21 pictured) playing her last game for the club and what a way to go out.
