Essex Senior League – Saturday 4th January Round-Up

(Report by Scott Lanza / Photo by Andy Wilkins)

Hoddesdon Town 3 Enfield 3

Hoddesdon Town had to come back from behind to ensure they got a share of the spoils – having looked well and truly on their way after only ten first half minutes. Liam Mulligan scored Hoddesdon’s opener in the 2nd minute and it became 2-0 soon afterwards when Isaac Marfo-Jacobs fired home a penalty. Michael Salako pulled one back via a penalty in the 16th minute and that started an Enfield revival that saw them score twice more before the half was out. Joe Pattison and Ben Bradbury scoring the goals. However ten minutes from time and the Lilywhites were level courtesy of Jack Gibbs. Hoddesdon end the day in 7th, while Enfield are down in 17th.

Ilford 0 Cockfosters 1

Ilford had plenty of chances against Cockfosters but were unable to find a way past Brad Robinson the visiting keeper. At the other end and James Verney notched the only goal of the game in the 72nd minute to claim all the spoils, which sees Cockfosters add a few more points to the board but remain 8th. No change for Ilford either who remain 12th.

Southend Manor 2 St Margaretsbury 1

Southend Manor picked up a priceless three point after a late show saw them overcome St Margaretsbury who were handed the lead in the 52nd minute courtesy of a Jermaine Nicholson goal. However Manor levelled up in the 72nd minute when Louis Hunt hit the target and then three minutes from time Reece Latimer notched the winning goal which sees Southend Manor move up to 16th. St Margaretsbury remain 11th after this result.

Stansted 5 Sawbridgeworth Town 1

Stansted put on a five star display against local rivals Sawbridgeworth Town which sees them now up to 6th. Connor Hammond scored twice in the opening period, with Daniel Cheema and Jack Mitchell also finding the net before the half-time whistle. Harry Bushell found a reply for Sawbridgeworth early in the second half, but the hosts added another goal through Ryan Ramsey and the defeat not only gives Stansted bragging rights but also places Sawbridgeworth in serious trouble as they are now bottom and starting to be cut off from the teams above them in the relegation battle.

Tower Hamlets 1 Hashtag United 2

Hashtag’s last league encounter saw them lose 2-1 at Hadley. They have had to wait three weeks to return to work, and they returned to winning ways at Mile End Stadium. Sam Byles handed the ESL title-chasers a 10th minute lead, however Tower Hamlets created a few chances themselves, rode their luck when George Smith had a shot hit the post, before levelling up with an Enock Soganile strike on the hour. However Hashtag went on to re-take the lead when Ricky Evans buried a free kick into the bottom left-hand corner in the 75th minute.

Walthamstow 2 Clapton 1

Walthamstow move back to the top of the table after a 2-1 win over Clapton. Danny McCullock opened the account 15 minutes into the contest, and then Dwade James doubles that lead when he converted a penalty in the 21st minute. The Tons are also needing points, albeit for differing reasons as they are down near the relegation zone, and they gave themselves a fighting chance at least of getting something from the game when Jaydon Charles pulled one back ten minutes from time. However there was to be no way back, meaning that Walthamstow now lead the table on goal difference over Saffron Walden Town, while Clapton end the day in 18th.
