Brentwood Town Make Trophy Exit

Brentwood Town 2 Basildon United 3

Buildbase FA Trophy Preliminary Round

Saturday 12th October

Report by Ken Hobbs

Basildon sub Kurt Smith scrambled home an 89th minute winner to win an entertaining FA Trophy encounter at the Brentwood Arena on Saturday.

The visitors had taken a lead just three minutes into the first half when Adam Vyse headed in Kris Newby’s free kick, but Brentwood skipper Michael Toner equalised on 31 minutes, netting from close range following Marcus Milner’s corner.

Four minutes into the second half Basildon goalkeeper Clarke Bogard made a very good save from Connor Hogan’s deflected shot. More chances fell to Blues’ centre forward Jason Williams and centre back Abdus Salami who headed wide from Jack Edwards’ cross.

At the other end Bees Ernest Okoh set up a chance for Newby who shot wide before Williams had another chance, this time from Michael Toner’s cross, but was just off target.

Brentwood keeper Tim Brown then made two good saves from Newby and Ayomikun Odukoya but  Odukoya put Basildon ahead again in the 72nd minute when he cut in from the right to score with a fine shot into the far corner.

That effort was matched by Blues’ Williams who held off a challenge and fired his team level in the 79th minute, only for Smith to grab that late goal for the visitors.

Brentwood Town: Brown, Pugsley, Toner, Edwards, Salami, Pianim, Milner (Vaughan 74), Hogan, Williams, Anderson (Curtis 73), Freeman.
