East Thurrock

Chelmsford City kept themselves in contention for a National League South play-off place in Corringham on Tuesday night, edging out Essex rivals East Thurrock United with a 2-1 victory.

Home boss John Coventry, having had the satisfaction of seeing his players consolidate a comfortable mid-table position in their first season at this level made 6 changes to his starting line up from the team that beat Oxford City 2-1 at Rookery Hill on Saturday, with former Chelmsford striker Sam Higgins coming back into his team. Visiting manager Rod Stringer, having seen his side draw 1-1 at Wealdstone at the weekend made just one change, Kane Haysman coming in for Max Cornhill.

The Clarets, backed by a sizeable following of supporters who had made the short trip south had the bulk of the early chances, and they got their reward with 9 minutes on the clock. A characteristic Robbie Willmott cross found Josh Hill, who powered a header past Rocks goalkeeper Lucas Lidakevicius to make it 1-0 to City.

11 minutes later the visitors thought they had made it 2-0, Chris Dickson finding the back of the net after being put through by Haysman but the former Charlton Athletic striker was deemed to have been offside, so his effort was disallowed. Unfortunately for Dickson he had a second effort ruled out on 23 minutes, due to a foul on Lidakevicius. Despite further chances, the Clarets went in a half time with the score still at 1-0.

After the break East Thurrock fought back almost immediately, scoring an equaliser in the 47th minute when along range effort by Michael Freiter was turned into the net by striker Harry Honesty. But the Clarets went back in front with 13 minutes remaining. Substitute Elliot Buchanan, who had only been on the field for 3 minutes after replacing Haysman fired a thunderbolt of a volley into the net to back it 2-1 to Chelmsford.

Reece Harris had a late chance for the Rocks, but City held on and in terms of the number of chances created deserved to take the 3 points. The win keeps them in 4th place 6 points above 6th placed Hungerford Town, who had beaten Weston-Super-Mare 2-1 the previous evening.

East Thurrock: Lisakevicius, Osifuwa, Ekpiteta, Peddie, Ekpiteta, Freiter (Wraight 74), Heard, Craddock (Marlow 74), Higgins (Harris 65), Akinwande, Honesty.

Chelmsford: Fitzsimons, Haines, Graham, Porter, Bush, Hill, Willmott, Rees, Theophanous (Cornhill 89), Dickson (Jeffers 63), Haysman (Buchanan 74).
