I started today’s show by playing David Bowie and Lazurus from his final album Blackstar.
I first heard some of Blackstar last week. On hearing a few minutes of the title track I dismissed it as miserable and self indulgent and didn’t bother to listen to the rest of the album.
Like most of us though I was very sad to hear of his death on Monday and knowing that he had produced this album under a death sentence of cancer I revisited the album. I found this a very humbling experience.
In the track Lazurus, Bowie appears to have written his own epitaph. Further than that though he has taken the occasion of his own death and turned it into a work of art.
The videos which accompany Blackstar and Lazurus are deep and disturbing and remind us all of our own mortality.
Art is supposed to touch us on an emotional level. Great art can touch us deeply and change our thinking and our lives.
In his final goodbye to us David Bowie has produced one of his finest pieces of art ever.
