This year’s Billericay Fun Walk was the most successful ever, with nearly 2,000 walkers taking part. Charity stalls, a massive barbecue and other entertainment were on hand to entertain thousands more people at one of Billericay’s biggest annual events.
The walk is organised by Billericay’s MP, John Baron, who once again launched this year’s event from Barleylands in Billericay with our local Town Crier, Jim Shrubb.
The event started in 2001 and has grown so much that it now operates under a separate trust (The Fun Walk Trust, charity no 1151626).
I took the long route and was rewarded by some stunning views from Crays Hill that you won’t see by merely driving through – although, since I thought it was nearly over when I reached the halfway point, I should probably get into some training for next year’s one.
While walking round I had a chat with John about the event and you can hear the interview again below.
Despite the weather being beautiful I still managed to find the windiest field on the course!
It’s now a monster of an event with 115 charities and good causes taking part. Corporate sponsors play a big part with companies adding over 60% to the charity pot over and above the amounts raised by the walkers. John gave his thanks to this year’s sponsors, which included Barratt Homes, Veolia Environmental Services, Hallmark Care Homes, Toomey Motors, Swan Housing Association, Ford Motor Co, IFE Global Logistics, New Holland Agriculture, Selex ES Ltd, Mr Barrie Stone and others.
The final figure raised for good causes has not yet been confirmed but the organisers are hoping to raise their 2012 target of £100,000.
We’re looking forward to 2015 and I’ll be pressganging a few more Phoenix presenters to take part! You can find our more about the walk by clicking here.
