Brentwood and Billericay in the Sixties

British Pathe put up 85,000 of its archive clips on Youtube last week and we’ve found a few that would be of interest to our listeners.

Here’s a fantastic and very much “of the times” clip of the 1962 Brentwood Carnival, with a football match on Shenfield Common. There’s a glimpse of the Palace Cinema. The cinema was demolished in 1968 and Boots now sits in its place at 51 High Street.

Some great footage of 14 year old Wynford Grant, editor of the Billericay Observer, with what looks like the rebuilding of Billericay railway station in 1961. Wynford’s website about the paper can be found here.

Another film on the building of the Meadows housing estate in Ingrave in 1957. Does anyone still live in these houses?
