The West Ham Way – show 95 (with Mark Phillips)

Click here to listen to the show again:

Welcome to the latest edition of The West Ham Way, Phoenix FM’s weekly round up of all things West Ham!

The show is presented every week by Dave Walker and Kev Slade from West Ham online fanzine Sex Drugs & Carlton Cole with help from serial ITK blogger @exwhuemployee, founder of The West Ham Way website.

This week’s show was recorded late on Monday evening as we’re all possibly doing something else at 7pm on Wednesday this week.

Dave and Ex chat to West Ham coach Mark Phillips, discuss England’s recent matches at the World Cup, talk about the players West Ham have signed in the transfer window and the ones the club might sign, and answer questions from listeners.

Warning: this show didn’t go out on FM and you may hear a little bit of swearing in it, especially when discussing a former player ….

The West Ham Way will be back next week on Wednesday at 7pm. #COYI

Essex Air Ambulance

On Thursday 14th September, I sat in for Michelle on the show and the main topic of conversation was the Essex Air Ambulance as it was their National Air Ambulance Week.

I was lucky enough to spend 2 days up at Anglia Flight Centres in Earls Colne, the home of the helicopter – The staff and crew were extremely generous with their time and not only did I get to speak to one of its pilots and critical-care doctors, but a few “up-close” pictures of the re-painted aircraft were also possible.

Essex Air AmbulanceThey typically fly 3-4 missions per day during daylight hours and its cruising speed of 150mph places it just not just minutes away from reaching an emergency, but being able to quickly transport patients to hospital.

One of the pilots on duty that day was Daniel Vickers who explained a bit about his background and what goes on during a shift.

The air ambulance is crewed by a paramedic and a critical-care doctor – and Dr Simon Keane was kind enough to explain how he got into his role and how this life-saving service is not part of the NHS but relies on generous donations to keep it flying.

The £6.5m MD902 helicopter, its crew and support staff are reliant on donations in excess of £400,000 per month, so if you have a great idea for a fundraising event, help and publicity materials are available here.

Earls Colne Airfield - panoramic viewA rather splendid panoramic image of the airfield at Earls Colne – Air Ambulance, hangars, planes and lots of grass!

The location is a plane-spotters paradise: It’s a working airfield, home of a popular flying school and aircraft hire facility as well as housing the fast-response vehicle for when the helicopter is out of service, eg: poor weather/visibility.

Amateur Radio and Helicopters?
Helping to raise awareness for the Air Ambulance were a group of Amateur Radio enthusiasts from “Essex Ham“.  Each year, an internationally co-ordinated event takes place which encourages radio operators to contact each other and make their local helicopter emergency service known.

I spoke with Pete Sipple, callsign M0PSX, about how this event is put together and what kind of radio signals are being received.

Here are 2 of the medial staff getting to grips with the Amateur Radio equipment – with me supervising!

Ocean Flaws live in session

It was great to welcome Ocean Flaws back into Phoenix FM for an acoustic session and interview.

2017-07-25 03 Ocean Flaws

The band haven’t been in to us since December 2015 and Callum, Alex and Hamish filled us in on what’s been happening in the meantime. Sean sadly couldn’t make it as he’s in the USA.

The boys also played three songs for us live in the studio – a cover of Glass Animals’ Gooey, recent single 20:22 and new single Tel Aviv.

New single Tel Aviv is out on Friday in all of the usual digital download and streaming places.

You can keep an eye on what the band are up to in the future by keeping an eye on their Facebook page.

Q&A Horror Peacock Theatre

Tomorrow is the last night of Horror at the Peacock Theatre Sadlers Wells. There is still time to grab tickets and you can read my review of the show (which is a must see for horror fans) here:

www.phoenixfm.com/2017/05/26/horror-peacock-theatre/

In the mean time, I was lucky enough to pose some questions to some of the cast. Enjoy!

From Gwen Langenberg (the ghost)

Were you a fan of horror films before this production?

I always watched horror movies since I was allowed to. I  can’t say I am a huge fan , but I do love to watch them and get that creepy scary feeling.

Which is your favourite horror film?

Poltergeist ( it was the first horror film I’ve watched)

Were there any references in the production that you were not aware of?

Nope , I don’t think so. Even if there was, we’ve played it so many times already that I know every reference by heart now…

Should people sleep with the light on after watching Horror?

Well my daughters friend told my daughter she would never sleep at our place anymore after seeing me as a ghost haha. But in real life we actually are very friendly people 😉 We will not hunt you in your sleep, because we have to sleep ourselves too.

Describe Horror (the show) in 3 words.

Scary, poetic theatre

From Maurits van den Berg (the boyfriend)

Were you a fan of horror films before this production?

I’m a major movie fan, including the better horror flicks. I especially like it when directors use horror-mechanisms in their way of telling a story. Like Frank Darabont, Ridley Scott or Peter Jackson do.

Which is your favourite horror film?

I saw The Shining when I was very young. That movie made such an impression that I watched it over and over again. A few years ago I was travelling through the United States and found out I was really close to the hotel of The Shining. With my small rental car I made the journey upon the mountain. I was totally alone for a long time on an empty road. It started snowing and it became more and more. At one point I thought I had to turn and just go back, but I finished the road. And there it was. The hotel, up and running covered with snow, just like in the movie.

Were there any references in the production that you were not aware of?

I’ve never seen Oculus, I still have to see that one. But as a movie-fan I was aware of most of the references in this play.

Should people sleep with the light on after watching Horror?

No, it’s a story with a beginning and an end. Although the road is bloody, painful and long for the sisters, somehow the main characters find peace. It will give the audience some rest and probably they will sleep well because of a good fulfilling night at the theatre.

Describe Horror (the show) in 3 words.

Lovely bloody hell.

Chris

SLOWGUN INTERVIEW AND SESSION ON THE JED SHEPHERD SHOW! (VIDEO)

slowgun

You know that saying? You know, the one that everyone says? I’ll remind you in case you’ve not been near any people lately. It’s the popular saying that people say about music and bands in general. “Every band needs a Piers in it“. You remember the saying now right? WRONG. Its a saying I just made up because Piers from Slowgun is in every band thats been on my show ever. Okay two, two bands, but you need to stop trying to pick fault in my words and concentrate on the below video of Slowgun doing ‘Stephen’ on my show. Its the tale of Toni’s (lead singer) friend who is coincidentally named Stephen as he gets into a fight, leaving the other guy “in bits”. It’s the best song about a Stephen I’ve heard since the one I sang in the playground at the tender age of 7 to my friend Stephen Appiah, provocatively titled “Stupid Stephen”.

You can hear the whole interview and session again using the links below and I rather think you should because “it’s better to listen to Slowgun, than to fight a man with a mouthful of tadpoles”. As you may have guessed, I have once again made up a saying, but rest assured, THAT one will catch on.

Part 1
20130922160010

Part 2
20130922170010

I love Slowgun alot and you be interested to know that their new single “Next Time/ Sidekick Me” was released last week 29.09.13 and they also just played with Japan’s very own ‘Shonen Knife’. I would like to one day play with Shonen Knife, but I don’t sing or have a band, so I will just have to play with Stanley Knife in my bedroom again.. (I don’t really dear readers – I’m not a Muse fan).

You can hear and read more about Slowgun and their many adventures with Tim Burgess in the below portals:

https://www.facebook.com/slowgunband
https://twitter.com/slowgunband
https://t.co/FoaW1qtB

and buy the new single here: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/next-time-sidekick-me-single/id695727264

this is the bio that someone else wrote which I recommend to read first before any of this. I shouldnt have put it at the bottom really, but I like each post to be a little like a ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ book where the narrative jumps all over the place to keep you on your toes:

SLOWGUN formed in 2005 and have been playing their catchy indie-rock-pop tunes on and off ever since. Toni sings and plays guitar, Piers plays another guitar and occasionally attempts to sing, Stef plays bass and Matt hits the drums with drumsticks. Slowgun have played gigs with Shonen Knife, Yuck, Bellini, The Primitives, Pete and the Pirates, Versus, Wussy and many more. Their self released green 7” single “Stephen” has been played on 6music and an earlier demo of “Sidekick Me” was played on Huw Stevens’ show on Radio 1.

enjoy!

The Jed Shepherd Show ft. Wolventrix

though i look surprised, i really wasn’t as I knew Wolventrix were there.

Another week, another #SWEETABIX band on The Jed Shepherd Show. This time around it’s WOLVENTRIX!

Hear the audio of the whole show below:

[audio:https://www.phoenixfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Jed-Shepherd-Show-ft.-Wolventrix.mp3|titles=Jed Shepherd Show ft. Wolventrix]

Things they are:

1) Lyrically a great band
2) Musically a great band
3) Really into underground animals

Things they are not:

1) The 14th letter of the alphabet
2) A long lost dinosaur
3) All that remains of a terrapin’s dream

So now you know that, have a look at the videos of the live session below!

We talked about their influences which include Rammstein, classical music and worms.

That’s Tom on guitar and Alex on keyboard.

Don’t get them mixed up with Alex and Tom from SNL.

For the second day in a row I named a guest’s new song. On Saturday it was Emma Prendergast’s (Emmy Poltergeist) new track, now called ‘Man of My Dreams’. Today it was Wolventrix’s new track ‘on endings’! (though it was more a confirmation the original name they had was right 🙂 )

To find out more about Wolventrix, follow them @wolventrix on twitter or https://en-gb.facebook.com/WOLVENTRIX on FB!
