Country Music’s Impact on American Culture and Society

Country music has had a massive impact on American culture and society. The genre is known around the world for its connection to the United States, particularly the Deep South. Artists like Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt, and Willie Nelson are considered legends in the music industry. However, while country music is known internationally, it’s often misunderstood. People don’t seem to understand that it’s a lot more nuanced than simple roper-wearing cowboys singing love ballads. For example, there are actually subgenres, the most notable of these being dubbed ‘outlaw country.’ Keep reading to find out more.

Historic America

One of the reasons that country music is so popular is because of its connection to historic America. Country music today incorporates many folk, blues, and rock elements. These genres are quintessentially American. Rock is perhaps the most influential in a modern country. An example of this, according to CountryThangDaily.com, is Jelly Roll’s song Wild Ones, which is the 10th most popular country song this week. Jelly Roll was heavily inspired by Lynyrd Skynyrd, a country rock band. Lynyrd Skynyrd themselves were inspired by folk and blues musicians. The connection that country music has to these genres makes it very intriguing and uniquely American.

Fashion Influence

Country musicians tend to wear Western-style clothes, like shirts with pearl snap fasteners and leather boots. The influence that the country genre has had on modern fashion is immense. More and more people are buying themselves ropers and turquoise jewelry than ever before, especially in cities like New York and Los Angeles. This is mainly because of country musicians popularizing this style of dress on social media and in their music videos. This Western wear popularity has spread overseas and now people in European cities are walking around in cowboy boots and Stetson hats.

Changing Times

The music industry has changed significantly over the course of the last several decades. Country music has not changed that much. While trends come and go, artists stick to the formula laid out by musicians like Johnny Cash a half-century ago. Additionally, country musicians generally make very wholesome music, making it appealing to people who appreciate a much simpler existence and care more about traditional American cultural norms. Country music has given many people comfort in very dark times. Nobody is alienated in country music, making it accessible to each and every American and anyone else anywhere in the world.

Rock ‘n’ Roll

Rock and roll is one of the most popular genres of music in the entire world. It has been extremely influential in the country genre, as mentioned above. Likewise, the country genre has influenced rock ‘n’ roll. The global popularity of rock ‘n’ roll is therefore inextricably tied to country music. The impact on American society rock ‘n’ roll has had cannot be understated. The rest of the world has also been heavily influenced by both genres, especially Europe, where they are two of the most popular.

Country music has had a huge impact on American and even world culture. It’s a fun genre with a lot to offer. If you’re new to it, check it out. You won’t be disappointed.
