Swimming the Channel with my Brother for Aspire

What a challenge, swimming the English Channel (in the next few days weather permitting). Christopher and Kevin Mundy have already raised over 7K for the amazing charity ASPIRE and are also swimming in the memory of their lovely Dad.

I met Christopher’s Mum, Kim, at a recent gig. She is a massive fan of The Condriacs (who I also sing with ) and we were talking about her sons and their up and coming challenge. “They have to chat to me on the radio” I said and sure enough between myself, Kim and Christopher it was organised.

The Swim is a massive undertaking and involves a lot of training, organisation and time.

Thanks to Kim for introducing me to your amazing sons you must be so proud and thank you to Christopher for introducing us to Aspire. There are so many charities across the UK that do incredible work and its good to shine a light on this amazing charity and its workers, volunteers and fundraisers.

THEIR STORY

WHO ARE ASPIRE

Aspire is a national charity that provides practical help to people who have been paralysed by Spinal Cord Injury. A spinal cord injury can happen to anyone at any time, and no one is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire exists because there is currently no cure.

People with Spinal Cord Injury will lose muscle and sensory control and a large majority will become full time wheelchair users for the rest of their lives. Historically, the majority of spinal injuries have been sustained by those aged 21 to 30, with nearly three quarters of new spinal cord injury patients being male. However, Spinal Cord Injury is increasingly affecting older people now too.  Approximately 2,500 people sustain a spinal cord injury in the UK each year.

Through its projects and programmes, Aspire offers practical support to the 50,000 people living with a spinal cord injury in the UK, from newly injured spinal cord injury patients in hospital and throughout their lives. This support allows people with spinal injury to lead fulfilled and independent lives in their homes, with their families, in their workplace and in leisure time.

CHRISTOPHER & KEVIN MUNDY

We are swimming The Channel in memory of our father, and as an example to his grandchildren, including Kev’s wonderful daughter, our magnificent nieces, nephews and Godchildren; to show that even the worst of moments can lead to positive change and development.

THANK YOU TO THE KINDNESS AND CARE OF FRIENDS, FAMILY, COLLEAGUES AND CLIENTS, WE ARE BEYOND BELIEF AND GRATITUDE TO HAVE EXCEEDED OUR OUTLANDISH TARGET:  THE AMOUNT COMMEMORATES THE DATE THAT WE LAID DAD TO REST, 6/6/22.

ALL DONATIONS FROM NOW UNTIL WE REACH OUR TARGET / 17th AUGUST ARE WORTH DOUBLE: AN ANONYMOUS DONOR PLEDGING £1 FOR EVERY £1 (€,$, &c.) WE RAISE!

Spinal injury and illness has also affected our family – our mother and sister have had spinal fusions and our paternal grandmother was paralysed by an accident – so supporting Aspire is a great and simple choice for us.

Thank you for all of your generosity – this has been a gruelling task, through ice swims and bone-chilling coldness to waves pelting us in the face and jellyfish stings.  However, this will be a wonderful achievement – a fantastic way to remember & pay tribute to Dad.

Christopher & Kevin.
