I was very sad to hear the news of the passing of Mark Keds last Sunday from pneumonia. The Senseless Things were the first band I ever saw who were all younger than me – maybe not a milestone that resonates with every gig-goer, but one that definitely made me feel like the bands I was watching were now my contempories – I wasn’t a kid looking up to rock stars any more.

That 1991 Town and Country Club show (in aid of Macmillan cancer charities) in question was a mini-festival in itself, with the Senseless Things headlining and Mega City 4, the Frank and Walters and Midway Still in support.

The Senseless Things brought back lots of memories for me – one was in my first flat in Romford, playing the CD of their newly-released second album The First Of Too Many over and over again, surrounded by empty Castlemaine XXXX cans and wondering why I was so bad at assembling MFI flat-pack furniture.

The Senseless Things, the New Adelphi Club, Hull – 19 March 2017

The Senseless Things were active between 1986 and 1995 but Mark was active in several other bands including Jolt and Deadcuts. I was lucky enough to catch the Senseless Things again at two of their three reunion shows – in 2007, at a show in tribute to another singer who left us way too early (Wiz from Mega City 4) and again in 2017 when they played a one-off at Shepherd’s Bush Empire which I was unable to make, so I headed up to the New Adelphi Club in Hull for the warm up.

Leaving Essex at 4pm and not realising quite how far up the A1 Hull was, I managed to get there pretty much just in time to see a band still at the peak of their musicianship. It’s a real loss to the indie/alternative music scene and shows that we have to make the most of what we’ve got.
