This Saturday’s local football included FA Trophy Second Round Qualifying action. And surely one of the most extraordinary ties of the round involved the team almost literally on Phoenix FM’s doorstep – Brentwood Town.

Adam Flanagan’s side could not have had a much worse start in their home clash with Chichester City, as the Sussex side cruised into a 2-0 lead within five minutes of the kick-off.

But the Blues managed to bounce back, Andy Freeman’s brace being followed by a winner from Rob Harvey in the fourth minute of injury time to complete a remarkable turnaround and put Brentwood through to the next stage of the competition.

A number of other Essex sides managed to progress. But in League Two of the EFL it wasn’t such a great day for our local sides Southend United and Leyton Orient, who both suffered defeats and Southend are back to propping up the table, as they continue to seek their first win of the 2020/21 season and also since Mark Molesley became their manager.

And none of our nearby National League/National League South sides managed to win either.

Billericay Town and Braintree Town will be especially concerned, with both sides yet to pick up a point so far in this campaign.

Our reporting team did a sterling job as always, with Andy Gardiner doing another dash into the studio at both half and full-time to tell us about events at the Brentwood Town game, Leigh Bailey who kept us up to date on Billericay Town v Havant & Waterlooville and Scott Lanza who covered the game of the day in the Essex Senior League, as Hashtag United regained pole position with a victory away to Cockfosters.
