Would you pay to stay at a friend’s house?

Now if you receive an invite to go and stay with someone, depending on the circumstances, you would expect to either reciprocate or maybe, if a load of you were going, agree some kind of arrangement to help out with costs for food etc, but I think it’s fair to say that you wouldn’t expect to receive a bill for your accommodation.

So when invited by supposedly close friends, and godmother to her daughters, to spend a few days at their house in Southern Italy, a mum of 2 was shocked when just 5 days before she was due to leave, she received a bill for £800 to cover the costs of the accommodation for a 5 day stay with food being charged extra on top of this.

She had intended offering £100 per head to cover the costs of the extra food involved, but not on top of a bill for accommodation.

Had it not been for the fact that she didn’t want to disappoint her children who had been so excited about the trip, she would probably have pulled out of the whole thing.

Not surprisingly the longterm friendship may now be in some doubt.

Being a Tuesday I was pleased to again welcome back MARGARET MILLS who’s chosen subject today was RUDYARD KIPLING and his connections with ESSEX.

See you again next week,
