I was delighted today to be joined by local folk group, STUCK IN THE MIDDLE, comprising Jon Greaves, Julian May on Guitar and vocals – and Angela Gardner who looks after percussion and is also on vocals.
The band has just written a song all about the old aerodrome at STOWE MARIES.
Over the past few years they had performed at a number of their functions so became very interested in the history of the place, especially as Jon had always had a big interest in aviation.
The airbase became operational in September 1916 in response to German air raids on the UK using Zeppelins and Gotha Bombers. It was one of a ring of defensive aerodromes in the East, including one at Goldhanger and another at Rochford (now Southend airport), that were built to protect the capital.
There is an open day coming up in a fortnight’s time on 22nd July at STOWE MARIES Airfield.
To buy the single (at just £3 per copy) and/or to get information or place advance orders about the forthcoming album – FUN FLIGHT AND MUSIC send an e-mail to jongreaves@live.co.uk.
Listen here to what the guys had to say on this subject by clicking on the link below: –
In the second hour of today’s show, we heard about the sheep in South Africa, which had been reported as having given birth to creature which appeared to be half human and half lamb.
The incident probably wouldn’t have raised any eyebrows had it occurred in some of the remoter parts of Wales or Australia, but in South Africa the local people were terrified that witchcraft might have been at work.
However investigation by local vets has revealed that the aberration was the result of the ewe becoming infected by Rift Valley Fever during the early stages of her pregnancy.
See you again next week,
Scott
