This Saturday sees the 62nd Eurovision Song Contest live from Ukraine’s capital city, Kyiv. GR80’s celebrated by remembering some classic 80’s Eurovision tunes!
1982 Nicole with A Little Peace. Nicole performed her winning reprise not only in German, but English, French and Dutch as well, in what would prove to be a masterstroke considering the release of the single throughout Europe.
1984 – Diggi-Loo Diggi-Ley sung by trio of brothers named Herrey’s. Fellow Swedish Eurovision participant Tommy Körberg famously dubbed them “the dancing deodorants” in the press, a derogatory nickname that stuck with them for the rest of their career.
Other 80’s winners include: Johnny Logan (who won twice for Ireland; with “What’s Another Year” in 1980, and “Hold Me Now” in 1987) and Bucks Fizz (“Making Your Mind Up“, United Kingdom 1981),
The French Canadian singer Céline Dion, who won the contest for Switzerland in 1988 with the song “Ne partez pas sans moi“, which subsequently helped launch her international career.
