80’s NEWS THIS WEEK

1983 – Richard Attenborough’s film Gandhi won eight Academy Awards including Best Picture. Richard Attenborough won for Best Director, and Ben Kingsley won for Best Actor. The film covers Gandhi’s life from a defining moment in 1893, as he is thrown off a South African train for being in a whites-only compartment, and concludes with his assassination and funeral in 1948.
Over 300,000 extras were used in the funeral scene, the most for any film according to Guinness World Records

1987 – Arsenal won the Football League Cup for the first time in their history with a 2-1 win over Liverpool, earning them their first major trophy since 1979. Charlie Nicholas scores both of Arsenal’s goals.
Liverpool are the most successful club in the history of the tournament with a total of eight wins.
