Bands to listen to this week include The History of Apple Pie, Devon Williams and YoungHusband. New tracks from Morrissey aired.

Totally in love with new band The History of Apple Pie who are making some very excellent music straight out of the nineties. Just don’t get bogged down with the fact that it sounds exactly like something out of the nineties because these kids were probably born in the nineties and are therefore ill-equipped to make music that is instead, a clver ironic homage to the nineties. Just like it for what it is. Fans of 13-era Blur, Dinosaur Jnr, Pavement etc etc will love this. Check out their single ‘You’re So Cool’.

Devon Williams is a fantastic singer/songwriter from LA who specialises in some really nice timeless pop that has influences from 80s punk to 60s pop with jangly guitars thrown in for good measure. His new album ‘Euphoria’ (out 30 August) is a future classic, charming and very well thought out with particular attention paid to melody and arrangement. Listen to his track ‘Your Sympathy’.

YoungHusband are from London and have been going for a couple years for they got signed. Their first single ‘Carousel’ came out two weeks ago, and it is an instantly rememberable hit. There is a a single guitar riff that repeats cyclically throughout the whole song, much like a carousel – genuis!

I also played over the last couple weeks, some new tracks from Morrissey. He has already recorded his tenth album in full and is ready to release the as yet unnamed record as soon as he finds a new label as he ended his contract with Major/Minor Records at the beginning of the year. So that’s HMV/Sire, RCA/Reprise, Attack/Sanctuary and Decca/Lost Highway so far…

Do check out Warpaint if you haven’t already. They’re one of the most exciting rock acts to come of LA for a while and I am ashamed that I hadn’t heard of them until I saw the Glastonbury highlights!
