Playlists 01/06 and 15/06 – Mr Little Jeans, Frankmusik, Appetite and Homeboy Sandman

Music-you-must-make-an-extra-special-effort-to-listen-to-this-week comes from Mr Little Jeans, Frankmusik, Appetite and Homeboy Sandman (just like the headline says).

Mr Little Jeans isn’t really Mr and she doesn’t particularly like denim either. Aka Monica Birkenes from London, Mr Little Jeans is a budding pop star who has, up until recently, been churning out a host of remixes for the likes of the Naked & Famous, Passion Pit, RAC and Pacific. She has an EP out now entitled Rescue Song, where she blends sweet pop with synths, dirty drum beats and some breathy vocals. Very cool. Check out her cover of the Arcade Fire track The Suburbs for free.

I’m glad to see Frankmusik is back with a new offering. Do It In The AM is slightly different avenue for the British electropop musician, thanks to the Far East Movement who has thrown in a hard hit of hip-hop to otherwise pretty vacous electro beats. Check out the various remixes of the record on the Frabkmusik website.

Appetite aka Teddy Briggs, is a drummer and self-taught producer with a taste for electronica. Fiery Ring is reworking of the famous Johnny Cash song Ring of Fire. The record is just genuis, which has taken the original and evolved it into something very cool, but keeps just enough of Cash so you exactly what it is that you are listening to (a big pet hate of mine is when bands cover a record and don’t recognise it – what’s the point?).

Homeboy Sandman makes me very excited about the world of hip hop. For at least the last 10 years, hip hop has been a pretty mediocre genre that has has played it too safe but slowly very slowly, it seems to be embracing other influences such as dance and electro. Not only can Homeboy Sandman spit some serious rhymes, he’s perfectionist when it comes to choosing the beats and incorporating and collaborating with different musical influences.
