Pacman and the first ever Rugby World Cup

facebook.com/GR80sRadioShow @Gr80sRadioShow

News this week in the 80’s
1980 – Namco releases the highly influential arcade game Pac-Man which became a social phenomenon. The player controls Pac-Man through a maze, eating pac-dots (also called pellets). When all pac-dots are eaten, Pac-Man is taken to the next stage. Four enemies (Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde) roam the maze, trying to catch Pac-Man. If an enemy touches Pac-Man, a life is lost and the Pac-Man itself withers and dies. It sold a large amount of merchandise and also inspired, among other things, an animated television series and a top-ten hit single.

1987 – First ever Rugby World Cup kicks off with New Zealand playing Italy at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand. England were knocked out in the quarter finals by Wales, who went on to claim third. The winners were New Zealand who beat France 29-9.
