With the return of the National League this week, the 2020/21 football season is finally in full swing.

But it proved to be a disappointing start in that league for Dagenham & Redbridge, who travelled north to FC Halifax Town for their opening fixture but found themselves on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline.

In League 2 of the EFL there was also a defeat for Leyton Orient, who were beaten 2-0 at home by Cheltenham Town. But Southend United picked up their first point of the season, Nathan Ralph’s equaliser five minutes from time giving the Shrimpers a share of the spoils at Crawley Town.

Many of our local non-League sides were in FA Cup action in the second qualifying round of the competition, and some went through to the next stage, but the two clubs on our immediate patch were both knocked out.

Billericay Town came agonisingly close to victory in their tie away to Brackley Town, only for the hosts to equalise in injury time and make the final score 2-2. The Northamptonshire side then went on to win the resulting penalty shoot-out.

And Brentwood Town also exited the competition after a narrow 1-0 defeat at Bishops Stortford.

In between the action I found time to play plenty of music. Here is this week’s playlist:

Matt Johnson – Sunshine

Laurel – Scream Drive Faster

New Order – Be A Rebel

Ohio Players – Fire

Mojo Slide – Not In My Name
