National League: Leyton Orient 0 Gateshead 2

Leyton Orient fell to a further 2-0 home defeat to Gateshead at the Matchroom Stadium.

A Jordan Burrow’s brace with a goal in each half was enough to see off Orient who now lie just four points off the relegation zone.

Steve Davis made two changes to his side that were beaten 1-0 at home on Saturday to Macclesfield Town. With James Dayton and Romauld Boco switching to the bench, as James Brophy and Jobi McAnuff get the nod to start.

Leyton Orient found themselves behind just eight minutes in, as Luke Hannant was given the ball to deliver his first time cross for Burrow to guide in – which left Charlie Grainger stationary.

Orient responded, as David Mooney played a delightful ball into Jake Caprice who cut in on goal to shoot which was blocked by Dan Hanford in the Gateshead goal.

Joe Widdowson flashed a cross into the box after he beat the Gateshead defender but the pass was just to heavy for Caprice at the far post.

Gateshead nearly doubled their lead, as JJ O’Donnell burst through the Orient midfield and let fly just outside the box but for a superb block by Mark Ellis.

Orient had a half chance, as Caprice slotted the ball into Macauley Bonne who held it up gave it back to Caprice to strike but his shot was tame.

The visitors almost doubled their lead, as O’Donnell beat Myles Judd down the left and played an early ball across the box for Jordan Preston to strike his shot just wide.

In the second half, Orient made a offensive change as Widdowson was replaced by James Dayton. The visitors also followed suit, as Theo Vassell came on in place of Callum Williams.

Dayton was straight into the action, as he whipped a ball in which Hanford parried away from Bonne’s head.

Gateshead were again given a glorious opportunity, as the ball got put into Burrow’s on the edge of the box and lashed his shot straight at Grainger.

Orient had the best chance of the match, as Caprice’s ball in bounced off Bonne and fell into the path of Mooney six-yards out but his shot was straight at Hanford.

The O’s tried to find the breakthrough, with neat play around the box as Bonne held the ball and laid it to Craig Clay to drag his shot well wide.

The sucker punch then came for Orient with eight minutes remaining. After an mistake at the back through Ellis’ bad headed pass went past Grainger and Burrow’s scored into an empty net, to heap more pressure on Orient.
