Ryman League Premier: Brentwood Town 0 Wingate & Finchley 1

Brentwood Town’s survival in the Ryman Premier has taken a hit, after back-to-back 1-0 home defeat to Wingate & Finchley at the Brentwood Arena.

Wingate grabbed the opener just before the break in the first half, as former Blues player Leon Fisher nodded in from close range.

Mike Flanagan made three changes to his side that lost 1-0 at home to Lewes, as new signing Simon Glover from Witham Town steps in place of the vacant Captain Martyn Stokes.

Connor Witherspoon returns from injury and replaces Marcus Milner, while Tom Richardson suffered an injury so Alex Teniola replaced him.

Brentwood made a late change to their lineup minutes before kick-off, as Mitch Hahn slotted in for Petrit Elbi.

Wingate almost scored in the opening three minutes of the match, as former midfielder Leon Fisher whipped in a free-kick which fell to the Captain Marc Weatherstone but his sliced volley was frantically cleared by Brentwood.

The visitors again threatened, as Karl Oliyide went past Leon Gordon into the box, lifted the ball over Ollie Bowles but debutant Glover hooked it around the post.

Brentwood nearly went in front themselves, as a long throw by Hahn was flicked on by Teniola and Shad Ngandu turned the ball goalwards but was saved by Charlie Crowley.

Wingate were dangerous down the left flank once again, as Oliyide ghosted past Gordon and whipped it in for Rob Laney whose header went over the crossbar.

‘The Blues’ on the half hour mark had a chance, as Teniola slotted in Ngandu to run through on goal but his shot went just over the bar.

Wingate took the lead four minutes before the break, as a cross to the far post was headed back across goal by Laney for the former Brentwood man Fisher to head in from the six-yard box.

In the second half, the away side almost doubled their lead as Weatherstone again flicked the inswinging corner by Fisher towards goal which Bowles lifted over the bar.

After the break the game was broken up by various substitutions by the visitors due to injury, which broke up any flow to the game and hindered any attacking flow from the home side.

The visitors saw out a fizzled end to the match, which leaves Brentwood still eight points off safety with just three games in hand.

‘The Blues’ will now look to a crucial game in their relegation fight, as they travel to Hendon in desperate need of three points.
