HOMESTART NEED YOUR HELP! Brentwood!

pauline and debs

A pleasure to be joined in the studio by Pauline Steggles and Deborah Griffiths from the award winning charity, Homestart.

Homestart has been going for 25 years and offers a valuable service for Brentwood.

I have to say that Pauline is truly deserving of an award for the time she has given to families over the last 17 years. Very humbled to meet someone who gives so much back. Truly inspirational.

ABOUT HOME START

Receiving practical support, kindness and a listening ear from someone who truly understands can make all the difference to being able to cope during difficult or challenging times in life. The Brentwood based Charity Homestart has been providing families with practical and emotional help during such times for over 25 years but they may now be forced to stop.

This award winning charity* supports families struggling in a variety of situations with children under 5 years; as well as lending a practical hand in the home with children, volunteers are also an emotional support to a family at crisis point. Homestart has 30 dedicated and reliable trained volunteers who visit more than 100 families per year in need of support across the Brentwood area.

Homestart brought me back from a very dark place as I was suffering from post-natal depression. They showed me kindness and gave me positive energy“, Tia explained.

Every recipient family has a different story to tell but they all share the same need for both practical and emotional help from someone who understands. Catherine explains how the charity helped her during a particular low point in her life, “… having lost a close relative, feeling overwhelmed looking after my twins, a toddler and the family home, Homestart helped not just practically but by listening to me and boosting my confidence.

This warm and welcoming charity also runs a Family Playgroup enabling mothers and fathers with young children to meet and mix with others with the added benefit of trained volunteers on hand with advice and support. The group is another lifeline for families who find that it gives them structure to their day, the opportunity to meet others in similar situations, make friends and a chance for their young children to socialise with others. Jackie can’t praise the group enough, “The playgroup is an essential part of our week; it is safe and welcoming where I have met many mothers and fathers from diverse, multi-national backgrounds yet we have many things in common.”

An important outcome of the service provided is that recipients also gain confidence, hope and strength to improve their lives. Rosa who has 5 daughters first approached Homestart after the birth of her fourth daughter almost 6 years ago and she now volunteers for the charity herself, “… they have given me confidence, reassurance and encouraged me to apply for my first job as a mid-day assistant. When I first visited Homestart I had very low self-esteem, was very quiet and only spoke when being spoken to. I cannot praise the service enough. ”

Chairwoman of the charity, Pat Dedman, who began her career as a health visitor has seen first hand how families struggle and wishes the Charity had been around when she was out visiting new mothers and families in the community. She is passionate about the charity’s cause, “We are a preventative service – often families are at crisis point and without the help we provide their situations would seem overwhelming. Without further funding, now that we have lost our Lottery grant bid we will be forced to stop providing this crucial service to our local Brentwood families in their hour of need.”
