On this week’s BYGONES feature, Margaret Mills took us back to July 1615 when it seems a well heeled inhabitant of Hatfield Broadoak – Lady Joan Barrington – obtained medical advice from her doctor – by post! How the doctor, based in Colchester, was able to diagnose her ailment without seeing his patient is astonishing but clearly the recommended cure did her no harm as she lived for another 26 years to the ripe old age of 83.
