The Real People Went Away – 11/08/13

barwick

Album Of The WeekJulianna Barwick – Nepenthe : This week’s AOTW is the second long-player from Brooklyn resident Julianna Barwick. A record I have been looking forward to some time being a massive fan of her 2011 debut The Magic Place. Nepenthe is a breathtaking journey through the ethereal which is haunting yet beautiful. Conjuring images of wandering through a forest at dawn or that moment when you wake up in the morning when you aren’t quite awake yet and everything has a surreal haze to it. This is music for the soul and music to get completely lost in.

33RPM At The MoviesRichard Band – Re-animator : Another soundtrack from 1985 this week (after last week’s Back To The Future) and this time it’s a cult classic horror movie. Based on the HP Lovecraft tale Herbert West : Re-animator, if you like your horror bloody and with more than a sizeable chunk of black humour then this film is definitely for you. The score for the film is heavily influenced by Bernard Hermann’s Psycho film score but is still one of my favourite 80’s film soundtracks. It has also been recently released on vinyl recently for the first time by Waxwork Records.

Past & PresentPet Shop Boys : A new feature started this week where I’ll be taking a look at a band and playing something from their earliest release and then a track from something current. For the first band I picked the Pet Shop Boys. Their debut release Please is part of some of my earliest musical memories and I finally got around to checking out their latest album Electric this week which was a real surprise as I didn’t expect it to be so good (shame on me I know!). The idea behind this new feature is to chart a band and how they’ve progressed from their beginnings to their current output. It’s something that really interests me and I spend quite a few evenings working through various artists discography.

PS. The brilliant Southend band Eight Rounds Rapid have released their first single Writeabout on vinyl. You should check this out. Here’s a link to their Facebook page for some more info, you won’t regret it!
