Lighting Up The Top 100 of The Eighties in Brentwood and Shenfield!

Well it was a busy weekend for Phoenix and me, helping both Brentwood and Shenfield to switch on their Christmas lights. Congratulations to everyone involved in these highly successful events, the organisers, Phoenix FM presenters and the fabulous performers who entertained at both events from the Phoenix FM stage. A truly great weekend!
On to the show today…
The penultimate edition of Top 100 of The Eighties included nos. 20 – 11. I thought I’d save the top ten for next week.
[11] TAINTED LOVE – Soft Cell – composed by Ed Cobb, of The Four Preps, and was originally recorded by Gloria Jones in 1965. It attained worldwide fame after being covered by Soft Cell in 1981, reaching number one in the UK Singles Chart, and has since been covered by numerous groups and artists. (1,135,000)
[12] EYE OF THE TIGER – Survivor – released in May 1982 as a single from their third album Eye of the Tiger. It was written at the request of actor Sylvester Stallone, who was unable to get permission for Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust”. The song was to be the theme song for the movie Rocky III in which Stallone was playing the main role. (990,000)
[13] BLUE MONDAY – New Order – Released in 1983 by British band New Order, and later remixed in 1988 and 1995. The song has been widely remixed and covered since its original release, and became a popular anthem in the dance club scene. (987,000)
[14] STAND AND DELIVER – Adam & The Ants – Adam and the Ants’ most successful single. It entered the UK Top 40 at Number One, stayed there for five weeks (985,000)
[15] ESPECIALLY FOR YOU – Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan – The single was released on 28 November 1988 and was written by Stock Aitken Waterman. (982,000)
[16] THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT – Tight Fit – a UK No.1 for three weeks (978,000)
[17] FAME – Irene Cara – Released in 1982, coinciding with the UK premiere of the Fame television series. It hit number one in the UK Singles Chart for three weeks. (975,000)
[18] GHOSTBUSTERS – Ray Parker Junior – the theme to the film of the same name starring Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd. Peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart on 16 September 1984, where it stayed for three weeks. (974,500)
[19] UPTOWN GIRL – Billy Joel – written and performed by musician Billy Joel, first released in 1983 on his album An Innocent Man. The lyrics describe a working-class “downtown man” attempting to woo a wealthy “uptown girl.” (974,000)
[20] RIDE ON TIME – Black Box – “Ride on Time” became a massive hit in Italy and then worldwide. The song spent six weeks at No.1 in the United Kingdom, ultimately becoming the biggest selling single of 1989 (973,850)
Last episode next week.
I then played…
Michael Buble – I Haven’t met You Yet
Travis – Flowers in the Window
Goyte – Somebody I Used to Know
Stevie Wonder – Superstition
Slade – Cum on Feel The Noize (To prove that they did make other records than the one that will drive us all mad in the next few weeks!)
Manfred Mann – Do Wah Diddy Diddy
The Style Council – Walls Come Tumbling Down
