Seems everyone in fashion has been reading the same book. It may not be brand new, but Just Kids, Patti Smith’s memoir, which won the American National Book Award in 2010, has been slowly capturing imaginations.

Patti Smith’s love affair and friendship with the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe is relived. Smith met Mapplethorpe in the Summer of Love, 1967, when she was a 19-year-old runaway, obsessed with dead French poets, and he was a 19-year-old artist, very into LSD. By 1989, when Mapplethorpe died of an Aids-related illness, he had become the most celebrated photographer of his age, while Smith was the high priestess of punk rock.

Just Kids has been described as the “greatest pick-up book of all time … Walk into any laundromat from Dalston to Brooklyn and you’ll find at least 13 “creatives” puzzling out how to be a bit more like Robert and Patti.

Now, designers are drawing from that source. The Yves Saint Laurent menswear designer, Stefano Pilati, has a definite New York Seventies thing going on in his autumn collection, with his monochrome palate referencing Smith, and his kinky leathers alluding to Mapplethorpe’s portraits of New York rent boys. His collection is called Sex and Money. “Every night before I rest my head/See those dollar bills go swirling ’round my bed,” as Smith once sang in Free Money, dreaming of a world without it.

The influence of Just Kids on the Topman DesignAW12 collection is still more pronounced. “We were inspired by its lyrical romanticism, her relationship with Robert and their early life together in the Chelsea Hotel,” says design director Gordon Richardson. The collection is tough and sharp, all stiff whites and thin greys, like Patti Smith on the cover of Horses. There are also silk shirts with a print based on Mapplethorpe’s famous still life of lilies.
