1985 – The Dire Straits album Brothers In Arms is released; it becomes the first million selling compact disc. Brothers in Arms charted at number one worldwide, spending 10 weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart. The album won two Grammy Awards in 1986, and also won Best British Album at the 1987 Brit Awards
1983 – Wheel clamps are first used to combat illegal parking in London. In 2003 One British man became so annoyed at having his car clamped that he removed the clamp with an angle grinder. He subsequently received publicity as a self-styled “superhero” called “Angle-Grinder Man”, offering to remove clamps for free with his angle grinder.
