St Helens School Fayre – judging the Bake Off!

Performance by Debut School of Performing Arts and interview with Lead Fire Fighter Savill:

Interviews with Amber, Poppy, Laurence, Benedict and Charles, and Millie:

On a very hot Saturday afternoon, I was invited to St Helens Junior School in Sawyers Hall Lane to judge the Bake Off at their annual Fayre. I had a lovely time, trying all the cakes, biscuits and scones made by the talented pupils and parents. Father Mark and I ‘worked’ very hard, and finally managed to choose the winners.
Xanthe Father Mark
Alex Gilham from Class 5 with his Teddy Bear cake won first prize. We thought it had great presentation and was light and creamy.
Cakes 1
Polly Brindle from Class 4 with her Scones won 2nd prize, The scones tasted wonderful and were all very even.

A special mention went to Joshua Leek’s Banana Cake which was quite pudding-y and had a delicious flavour.

We thought it must have taken Oscar Miller from class 4 a long time to decorate his chocolate cake – it was stunning.

Ellie Dohoo from Class 3 had lovely presentation with her tasty cupcakes.

Millie Austin from 5B won the Junior Prize for her beautiful Fruit Sponge.

The entries from the adults were so delicious it was hard to choose a winner, so we gave a joint first to Nicola Catling’s chocolate cupcakes, and Pat Austins St Helens inspired Chocolate Cake, and Mrs Askew came 2nd with her classic pink and blue cupcakes.

I had a chance to chat to some of the children at the Fayre, Amber Sharp (5) was having her nails painted, and Poppy Hennelly (5) was enjoying her face painting.

The Debut School of Performing Arts sounded great Debut school PA

I also chatted to Lead Fire Fighter Savill about the Fire Service’s contribution to the school fayre.

Finally a quick chat with cousins Laurence Bourberry, Benedict Jones and Charles Jones finished a fun filled afternoon.

Many thanks to the Parents Association and all the staff and volunteers who made the Fayre so enjoyable.
