On the first anniversary of Jack Bruce’s passing, a star-studded line up of world class musicians performed a moving musical tribute to the Scottish legend at The Roundhouse in London.

The tribute concert, musically directed by Nitin Sawhney, featured Jack’s Cream bandmate Ginger Baker, Roxy Music’s Phil Manzanera, Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson, Joss Stone, Level 42’s Mark King, Living Colour’s Vernon Reid, Uli Jon Roth, Hugh Cornwell and many more.  This incredible line-up delighted the capacity audience with a stunning selection of Bruce’s songs spanning his entire career, from the pre-Cream days to his final album ‘Silver Rails’.

The tribute concert was recorded for posterity and is presented in HD with surround sound audio. This unique recording will receive its debut screening in the luxurious surroundings of the Curzon Mayfair on 14th May 2018. This is a particularly auspicious date, as it would have marked Jack’s 75th Birthday.

This exclusive screening will be followed by a Q&A hosted by Edith Bowman. This will offer audience members a unique opportunity to quiz many of the original tribute’s contributors, including music director Nitin Sawhney, Phil Manzanera, Ian Anderson, Mark King and members of Bruce’s family, about this wonderful concert.

Nitin Sawhney says: “I felt deeply honoured when Natasha and Margrit asked me to musically direct this wonderful tribute show to Jack Bruce’s fantastic body of work.  Directing such a range of musical legends, who all came together to reproduce and perform the highlights of Jack’s work, was an enormously inspirational experience.  Everyone was determined to rise to the occasion and bring their own special talents to make this an unforgettable night and a fitting response to one of rock’s greatest songwriters and icons.

Thank you to all of Jack’s amazing family for the privilege of bringing such an important evening to life.”

This tribute concert is a fitting and lasting memory of the musical repertoire of which Jack was such a part. And of the man himself; often outspoken, volatile and impassioned, he retained the humble warmth and intelligence which marked him as one of the great musical personalities of our time.

A very limited number of VIP tickets are on sale via:

VIP Ticket includes a Royal Box seat, access to the Private VIP Reception, glass of bubbly, exclusive Jack Bruce merchandise package including tote bag, personalised event T-shirt, limited edition concert programme, and 2 x AAA passes for the after party raffle draw.

There are currently no further plans to release the footage, so this screening is the only occasion at which fans can watch this incredible live concert recording.

All profits from the screening will go to EACH – East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices. EACH were also the beneficiaries of the original tribute concert, which raised over £35,000.

Ian Anderson states: “From Jack’s earliest days with the Graham Bond Organisation, the Cream era and on through the various collaborations and solo work, he has continued to serve as a prime inspiration for me and thousands of other musicians, especially those whose performances graced this Roundhouse evening.

I first saw him play at the Nottingham Boat Club in 1966 and had the pleasure to work alongside him on collaborations several times in the final years.”

“Jack was a musical hero of mine, a true force of nature on and off stage, and became a great friend. I was delighted to be part of this powerful and moving tribute concert. I’d like to think that he was looking down on us all, with a wry smile, and thinking “Wow what talented kids Margrit and I have”, for me, their performances were the concert highlights!”  Phil Manzanera

“I was thrilled to perform at the memorial concert for dear Jack. It gave me the chance to say ‘thank you’ for a lifetime’s inspiration, and I am so glad that those who couldn’t be there can now share the love that we all have for this truly great musician. And those who were lucky enough to be there in person will now be able to experience that wonderful night all over again!”  Mark King

Wishbone Ash was formed by West Country musicians Martin Turner and Steve Upton, who arrived in London in 1969 to embark on their musical journey. Intent on creating a musical sound that was rich in texture and melody, Martin Turner envisaged the band’s innovative harmony-guitar hallmark and guitarists Ted Turner and Andy Powell were recruited via a now legendary Melody Maker advert. The partnership of the original line-up of Wishbone Ash forged a unique musical identity that would produce some of rock music’s best loved works and influencing numerous successful bands, resulting in millions of album sales and concert attendances. Wishbone Ash would become one of the most enduring and best loved British rock acts – its name synonymous with high quality guitar-driven melodic rock music.

Over four decades later, the enduring music of the classic marks of Wishbone Ash continues to delight audiences worldwide through both live performances and a rich legacy of recorded work that continues to be enjoyed by fans old and new. Classic album releases such as Wishbone Ash, Argus, Pilgrimage, There’s the Rub, New England and Live Dates defined the Wishbone Ash sound and have touched the hearts of several generations of music fans. As lead vocalist and key creative force, founding original member Martin Turner was central to the critical and commercial success of Wishbone Ash’s most revered albums, with his passionate vocal delivery, songwriting ability, keen melodic sense and production values being a key ingredient in the definitive Wishbone Ash sound. Martin Turner continues to perform the band’s best loved works with his current line-up, which features guitarists Danny Willson and Misha Nikolic, and drummer Tim Brown.

In recent years Martin Turner has delighted audiences worldwide with his performances of material from the classic periods of Wishbone Ash’s history. Martin’s Spring 2018 tour continues his exploration of the Wishbone Ash catalogue and coincides with the release of a deluxe 30-disc Wishbone Ash career retrospective CD boxed-set entitled The Vintage Years 1970-1991 (Snapper Music) as well as Martin Turner’s 2016-recorded 2CD/DVD package The Beauty Of Chaos – Live at the Citadel. The Spring 2018 tour shows shall feature classic tracks from the extensive Wishbone Ash repertoire, as well as new music that remains true to the original Wishbone Ash blueprint plus, of course, a full performance of There’s the Rub.

There’s the Rub marked a departure for Wishbone Ash, being their first album to be recorded in the USA (with noted producer Bill Szymczyk of Eagles fame) as well as the debut of new guitarist Laurie Wisefield, who had replaced original member Ted Turner. Featuring regular stage favourites FUBB and Persephone, as well as deeper album cuts such as Silver Shoes and Lady Jay the album received rave reviews from the UK media and charted at UK#16. It remains a firm favourite with the band’s loyal fanbase and connoisseurs of classic rock music and is widely regarded as one of the band’s most enduring works.

It is anticipated that fans will be enthralled by these vintage album tours, the likes of which have been so successful for other classic bands. As such this touring period will be followed in Autumn 2018 with further dates, these showcasing the ground-breaking debut Wishbone Ash album from 1970 in its entirety. Further album tours are likely in the future – a genuine last opportunity to hear these much-loved works performed live and in full by the founding member of the original Wishbone Ash.

I wanted to mix the live performances myself, but being a busy chap and not famous for my speediness, we decided to give it all to the wonderful Pete Reynolds whom I believe has done a brilliant job of mixing and remastering a massive collection of work. It’s almost like having one’s whole musical life in one box. It certainly represents the most comprehensive Wishbone collection that I know of and I hope you enjoy it.”

Andy Powell agrees, ”It’s truly amazing to look back at the musically fertile 70s and 80s and wonder at the sheer amount of incredible creative output from our band. We had great roots and a really strong blue-print for success. I feel blessed to have played my part in it all and I’m truly thankful that it’s set the course for my entire life and all the music that’s followed, as the band continues to live on into the 21st century.

Rarely is an anthology of this quality ever released… Wishbone Ash: The Vintage Years is so comprehensive and lovingly-compiled, with such beautiful and quality accompanying material … if ever there was a box set not to miss, this is it!

YES ‘FLY FROM HERE – Return Trip’

On 25th March prog icons YES will release a brand-new mix of their album Fly From Here – Return Trip, featuring the Drama line-up and new lead vocals by Trevor Horn, to coincide with their 50th Anniversary celebrations.

Fly From Here – Return Trip can be exclusively pre-ordered via Pledge Music here:

The original 2011 release of Fly From Here featured the band members who appeared on Drama: Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Alan White, Geoff Downes, plus Benoit David on lead vocals with Trevor Horn in the role of Producer.

The addition of Trevor’s lead vocals has produced a genuine sequel to Drama. Fly From Here – Return Trip was developed as a labour of love for all involved and the new vocals were recorded over the last two years amidst other commitments. Trevor began re-recording the lead vocals the day after he guested with YES at the Royal Albert Hall in 2016 and within 24 hours the rest of the band had joined him at his studio. Additional overdubs by other members have also been added.

In addition to remixing parts of the album, Trevor has added personal liner notes and the sleeve design features the painting by Roger Dean originally used on the inside of the 2011 edition.

Trevor Horn says: “I really enjoyed listening to Alan and Chris playing together again. Finishing off the album was a labour of love.”

Fly From Here  – Return Trip also contains a previously unreleased song, Don’t Take No for an Answer, recorded in 2011, with Steve Howe on lead vocals. Additionally, the full-length version of Hour of Need is included. This has previously only been included as a Japanese bonus track.

“It is great to have the original Drama line up playing Fly From Here plus several other songs Trevor had a big part in writing.”  comments Steve Howe.

Geoff Downes adds: “It’s quite amazing what Trevor has done with the album and the way it has turned out. It is most refreshing and adds a whole new dimension to the original recordings from 2011. I think the fans will appreciate it as a genuine sequel to the Drama album, and embrace it as a valuable part of our YES50 celebrations.”

Steve Hackett Adds Extra Dates to his Genesis Revisited Band & Orchestra Tour

Prog icon Steve Hackett has added 2 new dates to his October tour of Genesis Revisited, which features his band and a 41-piece orchestra as the London show at the Royal Festival Hall has already sold out! The additional shows are at The London Palladium and the Ipswich Regent. Tickets for both go on sale at 10.00 am on Friday 23rd February.

UK fans will not want to miss these unique performances of many of their favourite Genesis and classic Hackett numbers as Steve and his band are joined by a 41-piece orchestra.

The decision to undertake this tour was cemented following the critical success of last year’s one-off US performance of the Genesis Revisited music with his band and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by the charismatic Bradley Thachuk.

The show will feature some of Genesis’ best-loved songs, including Supper’s ReadyDancing with the Moonlit KnightFirth of Fifth and more. Steve will not be neglecting his remarkable solo repertoire and there will be tracks included such as Shadow of the Hierophant, El Niño and The Steppes.

Geoff Downes Talks YES at 50

Geoff Downes (R) talks about the upcoming YES 50th Anniversary tour as well as his work with Chris Braide (L) in DBA

I was delighted to speak over the phone with YES keyboardist Geoff Downes on Friday.

Geoff has a great pedigree in the music world, co-writing Video Killed the Radio Star with Buggles band mate Trevor Horn, also being a key member of Asia and co-writing their massive hit, Heat of the Moment.

Aside from these, Geoff is currently working on solo material, plus his project Downes Braide Association (DBA) with prolific songwriter for some of the World’s biggest pop acts, Chris Braide.

Listen again as we talk about all that, but firstly about YES’ upcoming 50th Anniversary tour in March.
