1980 – Alexandra Palace in London was gutted by fire during a Jazz Festival. The fire started under the organ and quickly spread destroying half the building. The outer walls survived and the eastern parts, including the theatre and the BBC television studios and aerial mast, were saved. Some of the damage to the palace was repaired immediately but Haringey council overspent on the restoration, creating a £30 million deficit. It was then reopened to the public in 1988 under a new management team.

1982 – Michael Fagan broke into Buckingham Palace and found his way to the bedroom of the Queen. An alarm sensor had detected his movements inside the palace but police thought the alarm was faulty and silenced it. The Queen woke when he disturbed a curtain, and initial reports said Fagan sat on the edge of her bed. But in a 2012 interview, he said she left the room immediately to seek security
