It had to happen – we had to talk shell suits!
Colette Booth admitted “I had a green and purple shellsuit – hideous!!”
Kev Binning said “I never had a shell suit, though I did dress Miami Vice style!” and Jen Jones owned up to ..”a puffball /ra ra skirt though, batwing jumpers and braces, although not worn together simultaneously!”
We also remembered our favourite magazines of the decade:
Briony Emmerson “Just 17 was my favourite ever magazine!! I never missed an issue!!”
Helen Clarke said “The problem pages in Mizz and Just 17 were much more interesting than those in Jackie!”
David Oliver – Viz
Emma Carter “I remember Blue Jeans magazine with Paul Young on the cover, he was my first crush!”
The Beano
The Beano’s first major revamp was in the 50th birthday issue of 1988, when the page number was increased, the comic had a wider paper style, and more colour was used throughout
During the 1980s, The Beano ran a ‘Readers’ Request’ feature where readers could request for a particular comic strip to feature in the Beano. This led to the return of dropped characters, including Little Plum, Baby Face Finlayson and The McTickles, but also led to the introduction of new strips such as Little Monkey.
BAND FEATURE – 7pm
If you are a singer/band and cover an 80’s track, I’ll play it and then tell the Phoenix FM listeners who you are, and where you are playing.
Tonight I featured UNTOUCHABLE who are an Essex based professional wedding and function band. They play classic hits spanning more than fifty years. The band performs as a three-piece or four-piece comprising guitar, bass and drums complemented by strong lead vocals and harmonies.
They gave me their excellent cover of GOLD (Spandau Ballet) with lead vocals by Jem Hunns.

Do you remember BLOCKBUSTERS?
Blockbusters was a game show in which contestants answered trivia questions to complete a path across or down a game board of hexagons. The programme premiered on 29 August 1983 on ITV and ran for eleven series. Bob Holness was the original presenter
All players received a “Blockbusters” Concise Oxford Dictionary and sweatshirt in the original ITV series. By 1986 the sweatshirt had been replaced by a “Blockbusters” branded cardigan in a choice of colours and a “Blockbusters” embossed filofax accompanied the dictionary
