Album Of The Week – Gold Panda – Half Of Where You Live : A release that I’d been looking forward to for some time, as I am massive fan of the electronic artists first album Lucky Shiner (which was released around the same time that I started dj’ing on Phoenix!). It certainly doesn’t disappoint, slightly more understated than his debut, working more as a record that you need to listen to as a whole to get a real feel for rather than individual tracks (although that’s not saying that there are some great single tracks on the album). The album was partly inspired by the travels around the world performing in support of his debut and on some of the tracks this really comes across (especially Brazil), and also some of the music seems insular and retrospective (he has mentioned the loneliness of touring as a solo performer). All in all an album that takes you on a real journey, and one I’ll be returning to again and again in the coming months.
33RPM At The Movies – Pulp Fiction – Various : This was recommended to me earlier on in the week and it immediately bought back memories of being 18 when the film was originally released. I saw the film 4 times at the cinema, mesmerised by the story, in awe of the acting and just thinking that this was the coolest thing I had ever seen (as you do when you are 18!). I also remember rushing out to get the soundtrack and it’s one of the oldest cd’s that I own. The little snippets of dialogue intertwined with surf guitar, Kool & The Gang and some absolute classics from Al Green and Dusty Springfield, just really fit what was happening on the screen and helped to create that atmosphere that completely drew me into the world Tarantino had made.
Name Remains The Same – All I Need – Radiohead, Cossbysweater (great name!) and Air made up the artists that all shared the track title this week.
A special mention goes to an artist that records under the moniker Oathless, who has just released via Bandcamp a stunning album entitled Peripheral: Music For An Imaginary Film. Atmospheric, neo-classical ambient music that is majestic in scope and an utterly compelling listen. You can download this as a pay what you want (don’t be cheap though) from the following link : https://hawkmoonrecords.bandcamp.com/album/peripheral-music-for-an-imaginary-film
