NEWS THIS WEEK in 1988: The first 16-year-olds sit the General Certificate of Secondary Education examinations, replacing both the O-level and CSE. One of the main aims was to allow pupils to complete coursework during their two years of study, which was marked by their teachers and contributed to their final examination grade.

1982: “A Little Peace” became the 500th UK No.1 single. It was a song in German, written for the Eurovision Song Contest 1982 which was held in Harrogate. It was performed by 17-year-old German high-school student Nicole, resulting in Germany’s first win at the Eurovision Song Contest by a record margin of 61 points.
