1986 – Halley’s Comet last appeared in the inner Solar System. Halley is the only short-period comet that is clearly visible to the naked eye from Earth, and the only naked-eye comet that might appear twice in a human lifetime (next due in 2061)

1987 – Party planner Cynthia Payne has been acquitted of nine charges of controlling prostitutes at her home in south west London.
The courtroom burst into applause after decision of the jury – of eight men and four women – was announced after just over five hours of deliberation
