Ex-Billericay Town striker Shamir Fenelon was proud of his contribution to Horsham’s memorable Emirates FA Cup run.

He netted the first equaliser in their 3-3 draw with Sky Bet League One side Barnsley, progressing despite a defeat in the replay as the Tykes fielded an illegible player.

The magical run ended with a 3-0 defeat at Sutton United in the second round but were one of the stories of the competition.

Fenelon was pleased to give back to his local side.

“The cup run was great and it was nice to score a goal,” he said.

“Horsham are my local side so it was nice to see how much it meant for the town and moments like that will be in the history of the club for a long time.”

The 29-year-old had a short spell at Billericay during the COVID-19 pandemic and predominantly played behind closed doors.

Fenelon was disappointed his time at New Lodge didn’t go to plan.

“My time at Billericay was spoiled by Coronavirus as the season finished early and we never got to play in front of the fans,” he stated.

“I was happy to sign for them and really thought we could have achieved something but it didn’t go to plan.

“I didn’t get to build much of a relationship with the squad although I did with Jake Robinson who I still speak to now and then.”

The ex-Brighton & Hove Albion man came up against his former side on Saturday as Horsham secured a 2-1 win, composedly slotting home to score the winner.

Fenelon believes they warranted three points against a promotion hopeful in Billericay.

“I think we played really well on Saturday and deserved the win,” he believes.

“We passed the ball around a lot and had good control of the game, especially considering we were away from home.”

Horsham occupy sixth place in the Isthmian Premier Division and are only one point off of the play-offs.

“If we win a few of the games in hand, we should be around fourth place which would be a fair reflection of our performance,” he said.

“In the early part of the season, it was hard to get consistent results in the league as we had the FA Cup run but since Christmas, we have been ticking along nicely.

“To seal promotion was the aim at the start of the season and with the squad we have, it’s something we should be achieving.”
